Green Holidays | Merlin Farm Holiday Cottages Cornwall
Our Green Policy
*Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are not able to be as green as we'd like inline with our usual green policy. This is mainly due to the harsher cleaning products required and increased use of disposable items. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and hope to review and update our green policy again in the near future. Thanks for bearing with us during these unprecedented times.*
When booking your holiday at Merlin Farm we want you to be assured that we do everything we can to ensure our business has the least possible impact on the environment. On this page you can find out what WE do to help the environment and what YOU can do during your stay to help.
What we do
WE REDUCE WASTE
We recycle & compost as much of our waste as possible. We have even created a dog poo composter. We keep free range chickens who eat our food scraps, and their bedding & horse dung is composted & used as organic fertilisers onsite. Paper free online booking dramatically reduces our need for consumables and our website acts as our online brochure eliminating the need for paper brochure production.
WE REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Our Eco Cottages are well insulated to maximise energy efficiency & Cathedral Style windows provide passive solar heating further reducing need for other heating source. We regularly monitor and manage our energy consumption. Towels heaters are timed to come on twice a day to dry towels instead of all day and night. Low energy infrared garden heaters (Eco Cottages) are timed to 5 minutes usage. Low energy and led light bulbs and category A efficiency appliances are fitted
WE CONSERVE WATER
We have water butts and a borehole onsite which we extract for watering plants.
The laundry company we use washes our bed linen and towels using water extracted from a borehole.
WE ARE SUSTAINABLE
We generate green electricity onsite via 216 solar PV panels. We have planted 250 Monterey Pine Trees onsite as part of our sustainable firewood programme. Hot water is provided by Solar Thermal Energy. Underfloor heating is provided by a ground source heat pump. We own an electric car and have replaced our petrol mower with a rechargeable robotic mower, both of which are charged up using the green electricity generated onsite
WE CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
We use eco friendly cleaning products and refill guests washing up liquid, cleaning spray's & washing powder with Ecover products. Linen and towels are laundered using eco friendly detergents. Guests toiletries from REN are also re-filled and are free from synthetic fragrance, pore blocking petrochemicals, sulfate detergents, silicones, synthetic colours, animal ingredients & parabens. We do not use any pesticides or weedkillers on our farm.
WE ENCOURAGE WILDLIFE
We have provided Barn Owl and Bat habitats by fitting specialist boxes around the site as well as leaving 10% of our 27 acre site in a 'natural' state essential for Barn Owl hunting ground, this includes the hedgerows and wetlands we own bordering the River Menahyl. We have planted several plants including Lavender to attract the Bees. We have created ponds to encourage wildlife.
We purchase environmentally friendly materials where appropriate, furniture made using wood from FSC approved sustainable forests and instead of buying new have upcycled some items of furniture. Complimentary biscuits are made locally. Tea, Coffee & Sugar purchased is fair trade. Cottage walls are adorned with local artwork. Signage & cottage keyrings are made using reclaimed wood from our local craft shop. Guest robes (*provided in our 5* accommodation) are made from sustainable bamboo yarn.
WE ARE COMMITTED
We are members of the 'Green Business Tourism Scheme' who assess our business regularly. Since joining the scheme in 2011 we have consistently received a Gold Accreditation and in 2014 we were the Greenest Self Catering Business in the scheme. We are also members of The Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project (Coast). We also take part in regular beach cleans & Community projects. We donate £1 from every booking to special causes such as the Barn Owl Trust, the RNLI and the Air Ambulance
WE RAISE AWARENESS
We provide a 'green guide' for our guests suggesting ideas such as 'car free' days, raising awareness of environmental & conservational issues in our area and the importance of eating and purchasing locally. Children are encouraged to be Eco Ranger's by completing our fun activity sheets asking them to help with the recycling, look out for the wildlife onsite and take part in '2 minute beach cleans'
What our guests can do
MANAGE WASTE EFFECTIVELY
Sort any recyclable waste into the Mixed or Glass recycling. Collect food waste in the kitchen caddy provided (our chickens will happily devour any bread scraps) and tip in to the compost bin. If you have a dog, please use our dog poo composter onsite. Don't throw away leftover food when you leave, we'll see it gets used or fed to our chickens. If you don't want to take your buckets, spades & body boards home, leave them at the farm and we'll see that they are re-used by future guests
Don't leave windows open when you go out. Switch off lights & TV's when you go out. Keep only essential lights on at night. Use the dishwasher and washing machine using daylight hours making good use of the solar pv generation. Hang clothes to dry on the clothes airer instead of using the tumble drier to dry your clothes. Use the energy efficient programmes when using the dishwasher & washing machine.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
Buy local food and services whilst you are here to help the local community that you came to visit. "If everyone in Cornwall spent just 50p per week on Cornish produce it would deliver over £10million into our local economy in a year". A list of all the facilities, shops, restaurants and activities can be found on our 'Mawgan Porth' page or in the folder in your cottage.
LOWER YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
Leave the car behind for a day, take a picnic and explore the nearby coastline, countryside and woodland. There are miles of beautiful walks direct from Merlin Farm. Bring your cycles or use local transport. You are more than welcome to plant a tree at Merlin Farm, a wonderful way to offset your carbon footprint and a reason to come back and see your tree grow.
BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Whenever you visit the beach always take your rubbish away with you. Don't buy single use plastic bottles, use your own refillable drinks containers. Help keep our beaches clean and marine life safe by doing '2 minute beach cleans' whenever you visit. Use ecological products, we provide & refill the Ecover washing up liquid & multi purpose spray in your cottage.
Barn Owl TrustLast year we donated to The Barn Owl Trust, We support the Trust because we love Barn Owls and have built Owl box habitats as well as set aside a 3 acre field exclusively for our Owls to hunt in. This successful program has ensured that our resident Barn Owls breed and thrive here year after year. Click here to visit the Barn Owl Trust Website
RNLIMerlin Farm donates £1 from every booking each year to special causes. This year we split our donation equally between the RNLI and our local Beach Clean Project. The RNLI save lives by providing a lifeboat service, seasonal lifeguards and flood rescue response. Please click here to find out more or to donate.
